Pediatrician Checkup

During the first few days after birth, we found out Sweetpea lost 10% of her weight when they weighed her during our postpartum visit on Monday. We were told that this was normal for breastfed babies, and once they reach their lowest point, they start gaining weight at a rate of 0.5 to 1 oz per day... typically, getting back to their birth weight after 14 days. At first, we were a concerned and was told to supplement by tube feeding 0.5oz of formula or pumped breastmilk after each feeding. Thankfully, we only needed to do this for that day since she had done really well in terms of not losing any more weight and gaining some back when they checked her weight again in the second postpartum visit the following day.

Last Friday, Sweetpea had her first pediatrician checkup; that's 3-4 days after her drop in weight. At this morning visit, she weighed in at 6lbs 6oz. Our pediatrician kept saying how amazing and remarkable it was that we were able to get her back close to her birth weight in such a little time especially being a first time breastfeeding only mom. We had a goal of plumping up our little one during the week and were very happy to hear the news of how healthy and how well our baby girl was doing. During this visit, Sweetpea also had to get the five circle foot prick blood draw. It wasn't as bad as we expected from watching her friend Lia's footage on their blog. I fed Sweetpea first to calm her down, so she was asleep in my arms. I was holding her upright when they pricked her foot. Of course, she started crying a few seconds after but eventually calmed down and continued sleeping as they continued to fill in the circles. We've taken a picture of her little bandaged boo boo. Overall, the checkup went pretty well, and we are optimistic about her future visits with her doctor.
